Tracing its origins to a small 1765 chapel in Libis Aromahan founded by Fr. Manuel Vanquero, the San Roque Cathedral has evolved from a mission outpost of Tondo into the spiritual heart of the Diocese of Kalookan. Formally established as a parish in 1815 and later moved to its present site in Paltok, the church served as a vital sanctuary during the Philippine Revolution, the American occupation, and World War II, famously housing Katipuneros and General Antonio Luna. Despite a period of dissolved status in the mid-19th century and the physical toll of various wars, the community consistently revitalized the structure through the efforts of dedicated pastors like Msgr. Boanerges Lechuga, who oversaw its major restoration in the 1980s. The church’s historical significance and spiritual resilience were officially recognized in 2003 when Pope John Paul II elevated the parish to a Cathedral following the creation of the Diocese of Kalookan. Today, San Roque Cathedral stands as a majestic beacon of faith and divine providence, serving as the seat of the Bishop for the cities of Kalookan, Malabon, and Navotas.
